The Words

People Being People

There we were on holiday on the Isle of Wight. And we met a few people being people.

First, there was the loud bus dude. He was sitting with a friend. And chatting non-stop over his shoulder to her. While playing bad recordings of gigs he’d been to. I don’t think he stopped talking for the whole bus journey.

Next, we happened to be on the floating bridge between East Cowes and Cowes. We were standing there minding our own business. This fella, in flip flops and carrying a man bag cleared his throat. And sniffed. On repeat. I don’t want to turn your stomach. But he sounded like he was bringing up a fur ball.

Then, out of nowhere, he said: “Gimme all yer money.” Which I ignored because he was looking in two places at once.

Then, on another bus journey we met the hot air crew. Three women pushed their way onto the bus in front of everyone else. Then, talked non-stop in loud voices about the weather and holidays they’d been on. One of the women kept wiping the bus window to clear the condensation. Ironic. Since they were responsible for most of it.

We got back to Ryde and walked along the seafront. The only noise was the gulls and the wind. Bliss.

If I wanted to collect examples of human beings behaving like humans do, I’d got good examples.
